DK Ribe Viking Museum 9/21

Husband encountered a few more of his relatives at this stop. Splashing about in rain again, we stopped briefly at the Ribe Viking Center, an outdoor venue better viewed on a sunny day. The three female statues represented past, present, and future. So far all three have rain.

DK Danish Breakfast 9/21

Breakfast at this hotel was the best of our trip so far. Very traditional Danish!

DK Dinner 9/20

Three different main dishes filled these hungry travelers, and boiled potatoes accompanied every dish. Husband had wienerschnitzel (again), daughter veal and pork rolle, and me broiled sole. All the sauces, butters, gravies, seasoned sprinkles, etc. added to the flavors and the calories.

DK Fredericia Postgaarden Hotel 9/20

We found our hotel before dark and were greeted by the two owners, one with Danevang connections. Their heartfelt welcome and the cozy elegance helped us to feel at home. We wasted little time settling into our room and went downstairs for dinner

DK Hvilsager Kirke 9/20

After dropping off our Internet friend, we had lunch at the Auning Kro. Daughter ordered pork tenderloin, I veal liver, husband hamburger and fries not exactly what he expected.

Next stop was the Hvilsager church where husband's great grandparents were buried. We also found the house and land where they lived with their children that included husband's grandmother.

Sign advertised smorgasbord, easy to find throughout Denmark.

DK Marie Magdalena 9/20

We found another church close to the area of husband's great grandparents.

DK Koed Kirke 9/20

The church at Koed also figured into the lives of husband's ancestors.

DK Oster Alling Church 9/20

Husband's grandmother was baptized at the church in Oster Alling, and we drove there soon after breakfast. Our Internet friend arranged a 9:30 appointment with the caretaker and the town historian, and they shared and corrected new information as well as confirmed some we had.

Husband inspected the ship suspended from the church ceiling as closely as possible. Ancient frescoes, only recently uncovered, decorated the church walls.

Danish Cousins

Jim's Danish relatives hosted a dinner for us at our hotel. Everyone has been helpful, gracious, enthusiastic, and more than kind. We are having great fun!

DK Auning Breakfast Before Church 9/20

First one to breakfast had a pot of coffee waiting again. We had a 9:30 appointment at the Oster Alling Church and trusted Garmin once again to get us there. Our internet American friend living there had come by the Inn last night after dinner to visit and tell us of more research. This church, like most others in the area, was easy to spot on its high perch and with its sparkling white paint

DK Auning Kro 9/19

Surely a double rainbow must indicate wonderful days ahead of us. Arriving at the Auning Kro (Danish word for Inn), we checked in, found the bar, ordered adult beverages, and looked at dinner menus. Without warning, in walked the cousins we had left only a half hour ago. They were returning papers husband had left at their house. We asked them to join us for dinner as our guests, and we all ordered wiener schnitzel, huge portions partially covered with bright green peas and served with potatoes and brown gravy. Oh my, that double rainbow brought us a memorable evening of food and family.
