DK Tivoli 9/23

After the marathon lunch in Skaelskor, we drove to Copenhagen and arrived at dark. We knew that Tivoli was closing for the season today, so we drove straight to that area first, found a parking space, paid the admission fee, and went inside. Lights, rides, people, food, drinks, architecture, Elvis, etc. Elvis? Yes, we saw him performing at a club in Tivoli Garden.

Light rain and exhaustion soon combined to send us on our way to find the hotel. Without Garmin we might not have been successful because we trusted her completely. Our hotel was new, proudly green, and a totally welcome sight.

DK Sunday Lunch 9/23

Cousin and her husband invited us to lunch at their home where we met all their children and grandchildren. They set up the patio for aperitifs and the party house for the meal. The three courses were traditional Danish and took four hours to consume. Aquavit was available with other adult beverages.

DK Another Discovery 9/23

Cousin found the house where husband's grandfather last lived with parents before moving out to work and leave Denmark. It is in the middle of a desperate restoration but retains many original features. The house is currently for sale. Cousins joked we should buy it. Haha.

DK Family Church 9/23

Breakfast at our modern hotel was a gigantic affair in a tall room with a circular wall. Tables had array of choices, and guests created happy plates. Sun streamed through but we expected later. Fascinating again was the rotary cheese slicer.

We had an appointment to meet cousin Richard at his home to explore two new leads. The first was a church where husband's great great grandparents were married.

DK Castles and Churches 9/22

With a couple of hours of daylight remaining, We search for castles/manors and churches listed on one of our maps, with Garmin's assistance, of course. To no surprise, H. C. traveled here as well.

On the way to our hotel, we marvel at the sunset across Danish farmland. For dinner we choose an Italian restaurant and order pizzas for a change up. Mine is gorgonzola, white asparagus, and Parma ham, photo glowing from the warm golden lighting, but pizza tasting delicious.

DK Orslev Kirke 9/22

Husband believes that his dad's mother worked at this church as a young woman. Our daughter points to a date in the tower. On the information display, we see that Hans Christian Andersen (known proudly as H. C. by most Danes) was also here.

These structures were almost the end but not quite. We bought souvenirs. And then more.

In the Viking village we watched a group of children attending a birthday party. The event planner had a warm fire going, a decorated party room, and Viking activities for participation. The fire danger was frightening enough, but she also let them wield an axe unsupervised. We moved on to poke around in the replicas built for this area of the site.

DK Vikings Again 9/22

Leaving Fredericia, we drove to the Trelleborg Museum and Viking Site where husband claims to have found more family members. Daughter dressed as a Viking Warrior Princess even when she knew I was standing by with my camera. She really liked the dress, but it was not for sale. Outside we explored the circle fortress and village.

DK Leaving Fredericia 9/22

These breakfast pastries, called Vienna rolls in Denmark, are known as Danishes in the rest of the world. Flaky crisp with butter and custard warm fresh out of the oven, they are irresistible. The kitchen brought us a bag to take with us on today's travels.

Saying goodby to new friends caused some concern that too much time will pass before seeing them again. Loading the car, we decided to circle through town a final round to appreciate our good times here.

Onward we drove, past an old lighthouse, over a new bridge.
